Using Humor and PSA-style Videos

What do you think of when you hear “online training” or “online education”? Over the years, I have heard many describe online training as boring tutorials that you have to click through, slide by slide, to fulfill a requirement set by your employer. As an instructional designer, I’m here to let you in on a little secret.

We like to squeeze “training” into anything and everything we do.

For example, at large-scale organizations like universities or multi-national corporations, the sheer number of employees and users causes issues relating to information security. That’s a lot of user accounts, and a lot of personal data that is put at stake on a daily basis. As trainers, we want to make sure our users are cognizant of these issues, and have the tools necessary to protect themselves.

But are we sure students/staff are going to embrace another online, click-through tutorial? Maybe, maybe not. What we do know is people like humor, and online video sites like YouTube are experiencing massive popularity and success. So in addition to formal training opportunities, we decided to push this topic in a new, unique direction:
